Description

At the moment it's doing a very basic Monit TCP check.

Let's beef it up to actually test the full operation of the Git protocol.

    It might be that this isn't necessary.

    I found that Monit wouldn't restart Git when it thinks the address it's trying to bind to is already in use (and it isn't...) Specifying an explicit --port seems to circumvent the error. This only happened once, so I am not 100% sure that this workaround is responsible for the fix, but it's a reasonable theory at least.

    Going to mark this as closed in the meantime.
