Description

When I originally added the tweets feature, I didn't care to integrate with Twitter (back in the early days it was unreliable and I scarcely saw the point of it). Nevertheless, I wanted the ability to post short remarks that were of tweet-length, so I built it.

Later on I added actual integration, but it's currently bombing out (see ticket #2134). I could fix that, but I think the time now is to re-evaluate the existence of this feature. Twitter is now reliable (it's a publicly-traded company at least), so while it may not be around forever, the likelihood of it remaining into the foreseeable future is considerable. And on the flip side, building and maintaining my own model is non-free. Additionally, there's a network effect at Twitter that increases the value of it as a distribution channel beyond the technicalities of it as an implementation.

So, this ticket is to suggest that it might be worth removing the old tweet model (the data could be transferred over to snippets for posterity), and replacing it with a "deeper" integration in which I just post my tweets on Twitter directly, and mirror them over here, instead of the other way around.

I went ahead and did it the cheap way (by using Twitter's "widget generator"). It's not amazingly pretty (doesn't really fit in with the look and feel of the site) but it's good enough for the interim at least, I think...

I'll deliberate on doing a proper server-side integration (although I am wary of that slowing down load times).

This is well underway now (although not deployed yet). All that remains is to delete some dead code. So marking this as closed.
