Machine was asleep and lid closed, but on opening the laptop lid, couldn’t see the lock screen. It just stayed black. Closing/reopening lid showed display turning off and on again. Hitting Escape turned the display off. Brightness keys still worked. I tried blindly entering my password but that didn’t work. Eventually gave up and did hard reset.
