  • ${VAR#prefix}: $VAR, with prefix matched by the pattern "prefix" deleted
  • ${VAR##prefix}: same, but the pattern is matched greedily
  • ${VAR%suffix}: $VAR, with the suffix matched by the pattern "suffix" deleted
  • ${VAR%%suffix}: same, but the pattern is matched greedily
